Have you FOUND a dog or cat?

You can help reunite a lost pet with their owner! Here’s how:

Post the found pet on Fresno Humane’s website by submitting a Found Report. The pet will appear on our website within 24 hours. Please be sure to include a clear photo of the dog or cat, as well as the location in which it was found and your contact information—your information will NOT be made public. The listing will stay on our website for 30 days. Important note: This report does NOT constitute a legal stray holding period, it is simply a courtesy post to advertise found pets. We encourage you to have the pet scanned for a microchip (you can bring the pet to a shelter or vet clinic to get scanned).

If you are unable to safely hold the pet yourself, please call or text us (559) 600-7387 during business hours. We do not recommend giving lost pets to “adopters,” “fosters,” or rescues, as this may actually make it more difficult to reunite the pet with its rightful owner. If you have an adopter or rescue interested in taking the pet, we can assist with transfer AFTER a legal stray hold. If you reunite the pet with its owner, or if the pet goes missing from your care, please call or text FHAS to let us know so we can update the listing.

Cats are considered free-roaming agents in Fresno City and County, meaning they can and will roam areas and do not need to be picked up and brought to the shelter. Most free-roaming cats that you see in your area have a care-taker and taking them away from their neighborhood will significantly decrease the chances of their owner finding them. Unless the cat is visibly injured, sick, or clearly abandoned by an owner, the cat does not need to be brought to a shelter. If you need assistance with community cats in your area, visit our TNR page.

If you have found sick or injured kittens, please contact our office at (559) 600-7387 during business hours for assistance.

Check for a collar and tags.  His/her family might just be a phone call away and missing them like crazy!

Take the pet to have him/her scanned for a microchip.  Any veterinarian, rescue group, or shelter will have a microchip scanner. There is no charge for this service, but if the pet has a chip, they will be able to give you the chip ID number and manufacturer of the chip.  The chip manufacturer should be able to put you in contact with the registered owners of the pet.  Phone numbers and website links for chip manufacturers are as follows:

Start your search with the universal look database. http://www.petmicrochiplookup.org/

If you have found a pet with a microchip and need help locating the owner you can text the our office for assistance. Text the number to 559-600-7387

Check Craigslist in the Pets section AND the Lost & Found section and post lost ads in both sections.

Make found flyers and post them in the area where the pet was found.  Ask local businesses if you can post them in their windows or on bulletin boards.  Make sure your phone number is readable!

Email a flyer to local rescue groups to spread the word, or better yet, post it on their Facebook pages! Pay attention to flyers in the area where the pet was found.  His/her owners might have posted lost flyers.
